[character]: Johanna Mason
[character history / background]: About the Victor
[character abilities]:
She’s a wonderful actress. She’s far stronger then she looks and has an amazing talent with an axe. She’s also very skilled at killing, and will often do it in vicious ways.
[character personality]:
Johanna is a bold and often blunt woman. She does not hold back when speaking, and often comes off as rude. Because of this she doesn’t often make friends.
That doesn’t mean that she is incapable of kindness: she just doesn't normally show it in words. She doesn’t comfort people by telling them it’s going to be okay, but instead gives them space or brings something else up instead. This is shown when she doesn’t ask Finnick directly what happened to Mags when they meet up.
Johanna doesn’t say she’s sorry for any of her actions, being too stubborn for something like that. Johanna still cares about others though, such as Finnick. She often shows her caring by being pissed off in their defense.
She knows the difference between right and wrong, though she doesn’t always voice it when it comes to herself. Her friends are something else though. Johanna still doesn’t allow many people to become close to her. She pushes them away with how blunt and abrasive she is. She’s either in your face or just insulting to you. Because she is a very perceptive person she often knows what way to approach someone and get the best reaction. This is why she isn’t always mean, but knows when someone will just leave her alone by being far too bold.
Joanna isn’t invincible though, and becomes shaken by certain conversations that bring up bad memories, or when even when something throws her off. When things like that happen she turns it around as quickly as possible, often making a bitter comment instead of admitting what’s bothering her, or changing the subject.
Johanna is a very calculating, self-aware woman. She makes sure that whatever she wants to be, she is, even if that means hurting herself in some way in the end. This can be seen when she leads Brutus and Enobaria away from Katniss knowing that she may be hurt or captured. She knows that she cares about others, but only tries to bury that under sarcastic remarks or poking fun at the other person. Because she is able to understand most any situation, it is easy for Johanna to understand when it’s best to act, and better to not. This makes her deadly when she wants to be. This can be overridden when she’s REALLY upset, such as when she started yelling her head off at Katniss for scolding her because she pushed Nuts. She’s not sorry for those moments though.
Johanna believes that the Capitol is full of a bunch of shitty people that should burn in hell. Though she played their Hunger Games surprisingly well for her district, she’s sick and tired of having to live with them constantly at her throat now. She also hates the way the people of her district are treated, but it’s hard to tell at times, since she never talks about it. She believes that President Snow is a bastard and should be stabbed repeatedly through the heart. Johanna is strong in those beliefs, though she’s not always clear about them. She’ll do what’s needed of her, even if she bitches while she does it.
Johanna doesn’t have any particular code that she lives by, but she will fight to live. She does what she wants when she wants. Her personality is so blunt because there is nothing holding her back. Everything that she loved was taken away from her when she wouldn’t allow President Snow to make her into a prostitute, so there is nothing to keep her tied down anymore. However, that doesn’t mean she won’t fight for what she wants.
When Johanna finds people annoying she doesn’t hesitate to say so, or make fun of them. This can be seen when she teases Katniss by taking off all of her clothing. Johanna thought Katniss a prude and wanted to throw her off balance with her body. Johanna believes that the overly sappy is just annoying, and that weak people are a nuisance and shouldn’t get in her way. She hates being dragged down, which can be seen when she had to deal with Nuts and Bolts. She would rather be where the action is and in control of what is happening. It’s upsetting to Johanna when she can’t control what is happening to her and she often reacts with hate and anger.
Johanna is quite the actress when she wants to be. She can seem charming, a weakling or even sympathetic. She only uses this when she must though since she would rather be herself. She has used this to her advantage when playing the games.
[point in timeline you're picking your character from]:After the explosion in the Quarter Quell Arena but before they torture her in the capital.
[journal post]:
[Johanna is sitting back in a chair, her legs tucked under her, running her fingers through her hair.]
So, which one of you wants to tell me what’s happening here? I get that I’m someplace that’s not Panem, and someone dropped this device on me, but that’s it. There are some strange things walking around here too. [Laughs.] Not like I’m normal, but uh, yeah [She rolls her eyes before propping her legs up on the arm of the chair.]
But hey, if any of you things want to talk to me, I’m all ears. Just don’t be annoying. I don’t need to hear your life story to get the idea of what’s going on here.
Oh, and I’m Johanna Mason. [She grins.] Anyone out there know who I am?
[third person / log sample]:
It was another Hunger Games and Johanna had two new kids to work with. Since she was the only female victor in her district it always fell to her to work with the girls. Right now they were on the train heading to the Capitol, and Johanna was trying to think of how to work the play this time. The girl was only 13, and therefore wasn’t a good pick to win, but it didn’t matter since she had to try to help.
“First, remember this. If you can’t kill them the moment you lay eyes on them, run.” It was the advice Johanna gave everyone, but it didn’t always work. It made Johanna groan just thinking about how many kids just stood there when confronted with a deadly person on the first day. Just like a deer in headlights, making them simple targets. At least, the younger ones...
“Fuck!” Johanna yelled out, throwing a close by knife at a wall. The girl had looked so pathetic that Johanna hadn't even bothered to remember her name. Fifteen was the age her district started everyone working on the lumber, so she couldn’t even throw an axe properly yet. Johanna decided then that the only way to give the girl a chance was if they tried having her wait things out until the end when most of the others were killed. That was, if she could run fast enough. Finding water and food would be next, but you had to live through the fist day for that to matter first.
The situation made Johanna think of Finnick for a moment. Even when he was little, the odds were all in his favor: looks, brains and talent. He was the youngest to survive and be crowned victor so far, right? Huh, well maybe it was time she pulled something like that off. Fuck, what was there to lose, right? Mags wasn’t the only Victor with a cunning mind. Perhaps the Careers would be idiots this year and eat something poisonous before the girl had to encounter them. The girl could at least climb a tree. Yeah, that was a start.
Johanna laughed for a moment. Fuck the other districts' kids. She would cut reminders into her girl's arm if that were what it took. Johanna stood and slammed the door open. “Girl! Get your skinny ass in here. I have to hammer this plan into your thick skull.”
